If you’re a pregnant woman, you should be filled with joy and happiness at this special time in your life. You probably have so much on your plate. Everything from deciding on a name, painting the baby’s room, and enjoying your baby shower with your friends and family. It is certainly a hectic but joyful time in life. But unfortunately many women, especially as their pregnancy progresses, can begin to experience severe lower back pain.
This does not only pose a problem for your daily tasks and chores, but it also affects the quality of your life. This is particularly sad since this is supposed to be a joyful time in your life.
It shouldn’t be hard to figure out that the pain your feeling is a direct result of your growing belly and added weight. As your stomach starts to protrude, it can start to pull you forward and throw off your balance. To help you keep your balance, your upper body then leans back. This posture will accentuate your curvature of your back and really place serious pressure on your lower back and hips.
That might make sense, but there is more to back pain during pregnancy. Imbalanced muscles will result in back pain not just with pregnant women, but in most people in our society today as well.
Muscle tone and strength is among the most important factor to consider in keeping your back healthy and fit. Normally your muscles should work evenly and with equal force when you move an arm or leg, for example. When one muscle tightens, another loosens. Both the contracting muscle and stretching muscle should move evenly and together. If not, then you are suffering from muscle imbalances.
As a pregnant woman, every movement you make from walking to bending over to twisting and sitting involves your muscles adapting to the added weight of your growing belly. You might already have muscle imbalances, but they will only be made worse by your pregnancy.
Your bones and joints will take up the bulk of the stress caused by these imbalances. Your back consists of 24 different vertebrae. Normally your spine and your hips are aligned to carry the weight of your body evenly. Your muscles will need to take up the burden if even one of the vertebrae is out of place and they will need to carry all the extra weight. When this happens, back pain and back injury are much more likely for you.
So, if this is what you’re going through, now you have to endure a painful pregnancy. It is sad that for many women with back pain their pregnancy becomes something so painful that it takes away from the joy and happiness that they normally feel.
